Creating remakes of popular movies is a risky business. Characters become iconic due to their unique features, style, intricate plotlines, and of course appearance. There’s no denying the fact that we also fall for some characters just because they look cute. This is why so much controversy surrounds new characters of Lara Croft, Catwoman, and the Enchanted trio. Some fans could go along with the new actresses, but others simply couldn’t put up with the transformations their favorite heroines went through. Here’s what popular female characters look like in remakes.
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
The original 90s show was really sweet, telling the story of a teenage witch, her talkative cat, and all kinds of funny situations they got into. The remake, on the other hand, offers the viewer a darker side of magic, rituals, great power, and the responsibility that comes with it. All in all the viewers are quite satisfied with the remake.
2018 was the year when a remake of Tomb Rider graced the silver screens, revealing the new face of Lara Croft. Needless to say, the movie sparked heated discussions as to whether Alicia Vikander is a worthy replacement of gorgeous Angelina Jolie in the role. Most fans were sure the movie wasn’t successful, and what can I say, the original Lara Croft just looks more stunning.
Sex and the City, featuring lovely Sarah Jessica Parker, was a real hit when it came out. Carrie Bradshaw was rocking various looks, combining trendy outfits with relationship adventures and cool life tips. The Carrie Diaries, a prequel to the series, was released 9 years after the original, featuring Anna Sophia Robb as the younger version of Carrie. Fans thought she didn’t quite pull off the persona of a New York fashionista, despite all the efforts of showrunners to make her look like the hip older Carrie.
The classic Charlie’s Angels movie we all know and love so much is actually a remake of a 1976 movie with a totally different set of characters compared to the one that was introduced 24 years later. Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu were an unforgettable trio! 19 years later (which is now) yet another remake is taking place featuring Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott.
Year 1998 was the year when we all got addicted to the Charmed TV show. It had everything : magic, mystery, drama, supernatural creatures, and three sisters having fun in-between all this. It was a real masterpiece, that’s why creating a remake might not have been the best idea. The new cast was just bland compared to the original one and the old fan base wasn’t happy at all.
Emilia Clarke might have made a perfect Queen of Dragons, but her depiction of Terminator’s Sarah Connor leaves much to be desired. Fans criticized the character’s decision-making and didn’t like Emilia Clarke’s acting at all. Whereas the original Sarah Connor was tough and her character developed in a believable way.
Dirty Dancing was released in 1987 but it has captured the hearts of viewers and critics alike for decades to come. The simple romantic story about a naïve rich girl and a passionate dancer was brought to life by amazing acting of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swazey. Those two had amazing chemistry! Something that can’t be said about the couple in the Dirty Dancing remake.
Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman was a big hit back in 1992. She was gorgeous, sensual, dark, and evil in the most delicious way. Critics put her on the list of greatest villains ever, naming Michelle Pfeiffer a perfect cast for the role. 10 years later Anne Hathaway stepped into Catwoman’s shoes, rocking an outfit created by none other than Giorgio Armani himself. Was she a better Catwoman? She was different, that’s for sure.
X-Men’s Jean Grey has never been a central character in the franchise, that’s why Famke Janssen’s acting deserves so much praise – she made the character believable, recognizable, and full of life. Sophie Turner was in the center of the new movie, which made it easier to make the character shine. Still, she was gorgeous in this role, too!
