Movie chemistry can be wonderfully deceptive. Two actors may look like lifelong friends—or convincing enemies—on screen while barely tolerating each other once the cameras stop rolling. Hollywood history is filled with stories of costars arguing over professionalism, personality clashes, difficult working conditions, and behavior that one person simply could not accept.
Some feuds became so intense that the actors openly said they never wanted to work together again. Others are more complicated. A few famous stories have been exaggerated over time, while certain stars eventually repaired relationships that once seemed permanently broken.
That distinction is important. An uncomfortable shoot does not automatically mean two actors demanded contractual separation, and a decades-old quote does not necessarily describe how they feel today. Still, the seven pairings below involved genuine tension confirmed by at least one of the people involved. From Game of Thrones exes who rarely appeared together to Fast & Furious stars whose feud spilled onto social media, these are the costar relationships that became almost as memorable as the movies and television shows themselves.
1. Jerome Flynn and Lena Headey
Jerome Flynn and Lena Headey had an unusual history before becoming Game of Thrones costars: they had reportedly dated years earlier. Once both joined HBO’s fantasy phenomenon as Bronn and Cersei Lannister, viewers noticed something curious—their characters virtually never interacted despite spending considerable time in the same locations.
Reports claimed the former couple deliberately avoided one another, and Flynn acknowledged in 2019 that they had once been a couple. However, he pushed back against suggestions that the situation remained hostile, saying they had appeared together in at least one scene and that he had last seen Headey while talking with her. The popular story that their contracts explicitly prevented them from sharing scenes remains unverified.

Blade: Trinity became almost as famous for its behind-the-scenes stories as for the movie itself. Patton Oswalt later described Wesley Snipes as unusually distant during production, while Ryan Reynolds’ improvisational style reportedly created an uncomfortable contrast with Snipes’ approach.
Years later, however, the supposed feud produced an unexpected ending. Snipes returned as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, appearing alongside Reynolds nearly two decades after Blade: Trinity. Snipes subsequently said the reunion helped resolve their old rivalry and praised Reynolds for his role in making the return happen. Whatever tension existed in 2004 clearly did not result in a permanent refusal to collaborate.

Freddie Prinze Jr. has been exceptionally direct about his experience working with Kiefer Sutherland on 24. Prinze joined the series as Cole Ortiz for its eighth season and later said the experience was so unpleasant that it contributed to his decision to step away from acting for a period.
In 2014, Prinze told ABC News that working with Sutherland was “terrible” and said he hated “every moment of it.” Sutherland’s representative responded that Sutherland enjoyed working with Prinze and wished him well. This is one of the strongest examples on the list because Prinze’s criticism came directly from him rather than anonymous set gossip.

The tension between Lucy Liu and Bill Murray on Charlie’s Angels has been discussed for years, but Liu eventually confirmed that a confrontation really did happen.
According to Liu, Murray began directing insulting comments toward her during a rehearsal after a scene had been reworked while he was absent. She confronted him rather than allowing the remarks to continue. Liu later explained that she had no regrets about standing up for herself, though she also said she had subsequently encountered Murray socially and did not portray herself as carrying an ongoing grudge.
Murray did not return for Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, with Bernie Mac taking over as Bosley.

If audiences sensed tension between Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte in the 1994 romantic comedy I Love Trouble, they may not have been imagining it.
During production, reports circulated that the costars did not get along and sometimes filmed separately. Roberts subsequently gave The New York Times an extraordinarily unflattering assessment of Nolte, calling him “completely disgusting.” Nolte later acknowledged that their relationship had been difficult and said they had not spoken in decades.
This was not simply a rumored Hollywood feud: both actors publicly acknowledged that working together had been unpleasant.

The Dwayne Johnson–Vin Diesel conflict exploded publicly during production of The Fate of the Furious. In 2016, Johnson posted a message criticizing unnamed male costars for behaving unprofessionally. It soon became widely understood that Diesel was at the center of the disagreement.
Johnson later confirmed that he and Diesel had fundamentally different approaches to filmmaking and said they did not shoot scenes together during that production. For years, another collaboration looked unlikely.
But Hollywood endings can change. Johnson returned as Luke Hobbs in a surprise Fast X appearance and later said he and Diesel had put the past behind them. The feud was real; the permanent breakup was not.

View 16 photos7. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron
Mad Max: Fury Road became a modern action classic, but filming it was extraordinarily demanding. Both Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy acknowledged the strain in their on-set relationship. The conflict escalated after Hardy reportedly arrived several hours late for a scheduled shoot, resulting in an intense confrontation. Theron later admitted that she did not always approach the situation with enough empathy, while Hardy acknowledged that he had been “in over my head” and said Theron needed a more experienced partner from him.
View 16 photosTheir story is less about two stars permanently refusing to work together than about two actors recognizing, years later, how difficult their collaboration had become under extreme production pressure.
