Watching people dance can be a magical experience. It’s not always about complicated moves or unique choreography. It’s not even about perfect technique or exceptional talent. Sometimes just music, charisma, and chemistry are enough to make people think, “Wow, that scene made me feel things.”
These Bollywood dance numbers have become instant cultural events because these performers managed to say more with a dance than they ever could with 10 pages of dialogue. People have replayed these scenes over and over, referenced them, and in some cases even secretly attempted to recreate them in their living rooms with questionable results. So let’s take a look at these dances that live in our heads rent-free.
“Chikni Chameli”
Katrina’s performance in “Chikni Chameli” was out of this world. It’s not just a dance, it’s a full-on cardio session that looks like top-tier entertainment. This is one of Bollywood’s most talked-about dance numbers, and a huge part of that is thanks to Katrina’s energy and charisma. You just can’t look away from her the whole time.
What truly seared this performance into our brains is the contrast. The styling is all rustic desi aesthetic, but Katrina looks like a real star no matter what. Plus, that choreography paired with Katrina’s intensity and facial expressions made it a crowd favourite. We also can’t help but notice that it looks so natural and effortless when Katrina is doing it, but if you try to recreate this at home, you quickly realise it is very hard work.
“Dilbar”
“Dilbar,” and this performance in particular, became a major turning point in Nora Fatehi’s career, and it is easy to see why. This song was a perfect opportunity to showcase her belly-dancing skills, and every single movement was so fluid that it kept everyone’s eyes glued to the screen. Every beat feels intentional, every transition is smooth, and as a viewer, you feel hypnotised by Nora’s performance.
This number cemented her as a huge part of Bollywood culture.
“Crazy Kiya Re”
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s dance brought so much glamour to “Crazy Kiya Re” in Dhoom 2. We loved her style and confidence and how she leaned into her character’s slightly mischievous persona. This song is easily the most memorable part of the film for those who appreciate a good dance.
The choreography in this feels modern and Western-inspired, and the styling only added to the impact. The sleek fashion choices, the sharp movements, and Aishwarya’s mesmerising screen presence made this dance unforgettable.
“Bang Bang”
Hrithik Roshan dancing is basically its own category of cinema. But when you watch him perform to “Bang Bang,” it’s a life-changing experience. The moves are pure heat, the body is on display, the charisma that man has — all of it together is just too hot to handle. And of course, Katrina only adds to the fire with her incredibly smooth choreography and seductive moves. This feels both like an international pop hit and something that should be almost illegal to watch at the same time.
“Chaiyya Chaiyya”
“Chaiyya Chaiyya” is instantly recognisable. If there’s one classic Bollywood moment, it has to be Malaika Arora and Shah Rukh Khan dancing on top of a moving train. It’s one of those Bollywood moments that feels almost mythological now.
The setting alone makes it impossible to forget, but Malaika’s energy takes this to a whole new level. The choreography looks simple but feels sensual and hypnotising, the passing landscape adds a moody feel that makes it seem like you’re in a dream, and the moving train adds an unexpected element. All of that together works so well that it still feels unique and thrilling even decades later.
There are iconic dance numbers, and then there is “Chaiyya Chaiyya,” casually dancing on a train roof like that is a totally normal workplace environment.
Schmidt and Cece — New Girl
Remember when Schmidt surprised Cece with his Bollywood-style dance? Yeah, this might not be the most skilled performance when it comes to Bollywood dance numbers because, let’s face it, Schmidt just kind of winged his way through that. But it’s the thought that counts, so the moment felt both funny and sweet, and Cece was definitely moved by Schmidt’s effort. The fact that they included this in a hit American TV show was awesome.
“Naacho Naacho” — RRR
If you find a more explosive dance number than “Naacho Naacho” from RRR, let us know. Because at this moment, it feels like there simply can’t be one.
N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan did such an amazing job that we wish we could give them an Oscar just for this number in particular. The choreography is so high-energy and so exciting that it’s hard to stay seated while watching it; you simply want to join in. The dance is so fast and so cheeky that it feels like their goal was to declare war on boring dance numbers.
And can we talk about the charisma and chemistry these two have? They’re so in sync, the moves are so precise and so joyful that it doesn’t feel like a practiced dance. It feels like two best friends showing off while having the time of their lives.
