People tend to play golf to wind down and relax after a stressful week of watching the stock market do a loop-the-loop. You stroll around some freshly-trimmed grass, curse at the sun getting in your eye, and maybe lose a few balls in a pond. But what you don’t expect is a dangerous cobra showing up on the golf course like it owns the place.
That is exactly what appears to happen in a viral video filmed on a golf course in Cape Town, South Africa. Whether the clip is real or some extremely committed AI nightmare, it has definitely done its job of making thousands of people suddenly drop their clubs and run back inside their homes.
The short clip was initially shared on Instagram by Elitha Peachey, who said the snake appeared while she and her friends were in the middle of their tee party. The caption called it a “Koperkapel,” which is another name for the Cape cobra, and joked that it was sitting right on the ladies’ tee box. Elitha also added that she would be hitting straight from now on to avoid having a close encounter with a venomous reptile in the rough.
The clip itself is only a few seconds long, but that is more than enough time for the internet to collectively panic. It shows a large cobra slither onto the grass and seems to smack a small signboard a few times. Maybe it thought that sign owed it money or something. Then the snake appears to stand still, scanning its surroundings, and then the clip ends.

Naturally, the big question is, why was there a cobra there in the first place? Snakes do not usually wake up and decide to casually ruin a golf game for fun. A mongoose stands at a distance from the cobra’s origin in the background of the video. This could be a plausible explanation, as mongooses are known to be snake predators, suggesting that the cobra may not have been “invading” the golf course, but rather fleeing for its life.

Due to the video being extremely short, not everyone is convinced it is real. The internet has trained us to trust absolutely nothing when it comes to short-form animal videos. Maybe if this was shot a decade ago, people would gasp and think, “Wow, nature is horrifying!” Now everyone squints at the screen and goes, “Hmm, the cobra’s movement looks off, so does the mongoose. This has to be AI.” A few commenters simply refused to believe a cobra would barge in so dramatically on a golf course, as they are very skittish unless provoked or scared.
This split is nothing surprising, as AI videos with cute (and not so cute) animals are literally everywhere, and it’s getting harder and harder to tell which ones are real and which ones were generated. Unless, of course, you see one of those Ring camera videos. Those are 99% fake. At this point, if a raccoon posted a cooking tutorial while wearing a cute “Wash your paws before you eat!” apron, half the comments would be people arguing about whether it was a trained animal or just a hallucination.

However, it’s important to note that nature can sometimes exhibit strange behavior. Being a home to countless species of snakes, South Africa is no stranger to encounters between humans and these nasty danger noodles. Cape cobras, in particular, are no joke. They are considered one of the more dangerous snakes in southern Africa, and their venom can be extremely serious. So while the video may look dramatic and somewhat fake, such a situation is far from being impossible.
So, is the golf course cobra real? The honest answer is that the video has sparked debate, and without clear verification, people are going to keep arguing, so you might as well pick whichever side you want. Regardless of its authenticity, the video possesses all the elements of a viral sensation: peril, intrigue, and a menacing reptile approaching individuals.

And even if it is an AI-generated fake made for engagement, there’s still one very useful lesson here: Always check the tee box before you swing.
