Europe has some lovely cities that get hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions of visitors per year. The diversity on the continent is so immense that it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular region for traveling. Sadly though, most tourism seems to center around the more Western European countries like Italy, Spain and France.
Other parts of Europe have loads to offer too. Scandinavia will probably give you the most beautiful nature you’ll ever see, and Central Europe has a historic charm that’s simply impossible to find anywhere else. But what about Eastern Europe? Well, let’s take a look at some marvelous cities you could visit there.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
I mean, just don’t go all Daenerys on it and burn it to the ground, but this is the city where most – if not all – of the filming of the King’s Landing scenes in GoT were done. Also, it’s a pretty beautiful city.
Tallinn, Estonia
This city has somehow managed to retain its wonderful historic charm of being an old town in a small country. It’s not a place where you can spend an entire week, but Tallinn will keep you entertained for a day or two.
Riga, Latvia
A wonderfully colorful town, this one might be perfect if you’re doing a Baltics city trip. Do a few days in Tallinn and then visit Riga – neither of them is big enough to keep you entertained for longer than two days, but both of them merit at least a visit and flights between both cities are dirt cheap.
Lviv, Ukraine
Lviv has a very unique architecture in the sense that this city shows influences from all regions of Europe. It’s certainly a beautiful sight to behold and it makes this small city look like the entire world moved through it at one point.
St. Petersburg, Russia
If you’re into architecture, there’s probably very few places in the world that are better than St. Petersburg. It really has that authentic Eastern European style that has been often emulated, but never copied.
Bratislava, Slovakia
So close to Austria it’s almost unfair to call it an Eastern European city – and it does show in its typical almost Austrian charm. Take everything that’s good about Vienna and add some Eastern European flair and charm to it, and you have Bratislava.
Prague, Czech Republic
Ask anyone who’s been there: there’s few things as charming and magical as Prague covered in a blanket of snow. If you’re looking for a place to visit in the winter season and you don’t like skiing much, this is the perfect place to go.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest has grown into one of the most popular cities in Eastern Europe. While no one talked about visiting it a decade ago, more and more people have started to realize that this city is truly a hidden gem that needs to be seen at least once in your lifetime.
