Some critics (and fans) say that superhero movies like Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 or Daredevil with Ben Affleck are the absolute worst. Well, maybe they aren’t the best, but when it comes to total trash, there’s a lot of distance between them and, let’s say, Howard the Duck or Fant4stic reboot.
According to the ratings of critics on Rotten Tomatoes and regular users, the list of top 8 worst superhero movies looks like this:
1. Howard the Duck (1986) – RT score: 15%
When a talking duck from a different dimension becomes a superhero, even having George Lucas as an executive producer, will not be enough to make that movie work. “Howard the Duck” has successfully proven to be one of the most ridiculous comic book movies in Hollywood history.
2. “Superman 4: The Quest for Peace” (1987) – RT score: 12%
Can any of you, dear readers, tell me what Superman 4 was about? I’m sure you have no idea. A slurred plot, tons of lore inconsistencies, and almost immeasurable box-office results that didn’t even cover the cost of filming – what’s super about that?
3. “Steel” (1997) – RT score: 12%
Back in the 90s’, the Death of Superman was a hugely influential arc. Superman died, and a few new Supes-wannabees came to claim his place. One of them was John Henry Irons, who later became this hammer-wielding Steel character. This whose storyline gave Kenneth Johnson, the “king” of television films, the idea to make a movie not even about Superman himself, but about this Steel dude. He was played by Shaq himself, which to this day is the most memorable thing about the movie.
4. “Batman and Robin” (1997) – RT score: 11%
“Batman and Robin” is another example of how even the most famous actors are not enough to pull off a horrible movie. Despite having stars such as George Clooney, Uma Thurman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger on board, the critics destroyed the film. Well, at least we got to hear Arnie say all those ice puns! “Everybody chill!”
5. Elektra (2005) – RT score: 11%
Without questioning Jennifer Garner’s acting talents, one could immediately say that nobody asked for a superhero blockbuster about Elektra. 80% of Marvel fans were completely uninterested in seeing this film. As a result, the low rating and insignificant box office numbers were completely justified.
6. “Fantastic Four” (2015) – RT score: 9%
For me personally, the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot is the lazies cash-in ever made. According to the director, the viewers will never see what the new “Fantastic Four” movie was supposed to look like, as he claims that it got cut to bits and pieces by FOX. And, honestly, I don’t doubt those idiots for one second, but the movie was still released.
7. “Catwoman” (2004) – RT score: 9%
Like Electra, Catwoman was a completely unnecessary spin-off. So, as expected, it failed at the box office, despite starring Halle Berry in a tight (but ugly) leather suit. And if “Electra” at least covered its production budget, “Catwoman” only grabbed 82 million, with a budget of $ 100 million.
8. “Supergirl” (1984) – RT score: 7%
It seems that in the eighties, the audience was not ready for the appearance of a strong, independent female superhero. Supergirl was one of the first comic book movies starring a woman in a key role. Critics and the audience were not gentle with her. They completely destroyed it, but still complimented Faye Dunaway on doing her best. Those darn boomers!
