8 Reasons Why You Should Watch The Umbrella Academy

It’s only been a few weeks since Bird Box and Netflix already has a new hype lined up for us: Umbrella Academy! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of this show. If you haven’t looked at it yet, let me give you some reasons why you should probably move it up in your backlog.

It’s Based On A Comic Book
That’s always a good thing, right? Comic books usually have more fleshed out characters, and Umbrella Academy is no exception to this rule. This particular comic book series, however, was written by Gerard Way – yes, the guy from My Chemical Romance.

The Tone Is Unique
This series takes the best parts of all superhero movies we’ve seen and mixes them effortlessly. You have Marvel’s light moments, DC/Watchmen’s darker mood, and it has a nice sci-fi sauce added to it.

The Cast Is Amazing
It stars Mary J Blige, Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan (Nathan from Misfits), … Either one of those actors would be enough to warrant a watch.

We Kind of Needed This
With Marvel and DC churning out movies like it’s nobody’s business, this show deserves a spot in your library just for the simple fact that it’s different and a nice mix-up from what we’ve been seeing the last few years.

It’s An Atypical Superhero Story
It’s not as much about the superhero part as it is about how these not-regular people try to get along with each other and all deal with their own problems. It’s a story about a dysfunctional family, but they just so happen to have superpowers as well.

It Follows The Source Material
Any Marvel or DC fan will tell you the significance of this. Following the source material is a very, very important factor to not alienate older fans. Umbrella Academy follows the source material almost to the letter.

The Reviews Are Extremely Positive
I know, reviews aren’t everything, but they’re not nothing either. Good reviews usually means there’s at least some merit to a show.

The Music Is Amazing
This kind of makes sense for a show based on a comic made by a musician (how many forms of entertainment can you combine?), but it’s worth an extra notice because the music in this show really adds to the flavor. Think of what the music in Stranger Things does to amplify the 80’s vibe.
