There have been a lot of big movies in the cinemas this year. I mean, we got the live-action Lion King with Beyonce and Donald Glover. There was a lot of hype about the new Star Wars. Toy Story 4 came out this year. And of course, we finally found out the fate of our favorite superheroes in Avengers: Endgame. But those aren’t the only movies worth watching. Here are 10 films what came out in 2019 that deserved much more attention than they got.
1.Marriage Story
With Adam Driver and Scarlette Johanson starring in the movie it’s honestly surprising we didn’t hear more about it. It’s a story of a couple going through a pretty difficult divorce and figuring out the question of custody for their child. It’s directed by Noah Baumbach, which should tell you a lot about the feel and mood of the film. The critics have described it as a very deep and honest look at what divorce is really like.
2.The Lighthouse
A black and white horror movie about two lighthouse keepers living in isolation and trying to keep their sanity. The cast is exceptional – Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson do an amazing job. The story is dark yet exciting and executed in such an amazing way.
3.The King
Everyone’s favourite – Timothee Chalamet stars in this movie so that’s already a good reason to watch it. And the other two reasons are Robert Pattinson and Lily-Rose Depp who also play important parts in this movie. It’s a film that tells the story of King Henry V but the side we don’t get to learn about much. It’s not about history and dates, it’s about emotions, thoughts, doubts and feelings.
4. An Easy Girl
A story of two girls that takes place in the French Riviera. One is a modest and shy, but intelligent and determined girl whose goal is to get into a prestigious college and then get a good job that pays well. The other is an easygoing and flirtatious girl who knows how to get men’s attention. The two girls meet and the journey they embark on will change them both.
5. Atlantics
This movie has been called the best Senegal film of the last 50 years. It’s the story of working men from Senegal who are tired of living their lives in poverty and want to move away from their homeland and look for a better life elsewhere. But one of them, a young builder named Souleiman realises he doesn’t want to look for wealth or freedom unless he’s got a 17-year-old Ada by his side.
6. The Death and Life of John F. Donovan
John F. Donovan is a star of a teenage series on television. He’s successful but is forced to hide his sexual orientation in order to maintain his job and career. At first, he seems to cope by corresponding with his fans, but then the press finds out about this correspondence and his life starts to go up in flames. Oh, and did we mention Kit Harrington stars in this movie?
7. Ford Vs Ferrari
Matt Damon and Christian Bale star in this movie which is already hella exciting. It’s the story of the competition between Ford and Ferrari who both plan on winning Le Mans race in 1966. If you love racing this movie is definitely for you.
8. Her Smell
The movie centers around Becky and her life. She’s doing well as a punk rock star, she’s at the height of her career, but it’s taking a massive toll on her mental health. The main question the movie asks is “will she ever be able to feel happy again?”. And the answer is not as straightforward as you might think.
9. The Art Of Racing In The Rain
While the main character in the movie is a golden retriever named Enzo Ferarri, it’s not your typical dog movie. This one tells a story of friendship, support and love. This dog is the most loyal friend for his racer owner and stays with him through thick and thin.
10. Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation
It’s a movie about the biggest event in the history of music. Few of us were able to be there, but it was a true hippy manifesto. So if you want to relive it or discover more about Woodstock and what happened there in those 3 glorious days – this is the best movie to watch.
