When you’re just a regular Joe, it can be difficult to lose weight. So imagine what celebrities have to go through when their livelihood depends on them looking slim or even ripped. Well, in fairness, they have the means to hire a personal trainer to get them into shape and a chef to cook satisfying, nutritious food. But even with that, they often succumb to the temptations of eating whatever they want and packing on the pounds. But there are exceptions to the rule. Here are 10 celebrities who have lost weight and kept it off.
1. Chris Pratt
When Pratt co-starred on Parks & Recreation, he was known as the chubby, lovable dofus. But when he landed the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in 2014, he suddenly transformed into swole, Hollywood leading man. He’s also subsequently starred in a pair of Jurassic World movies (with a third one coming out in 2022) and The Tomorrow War, a military science fiction flick scheduled for release this July.
2. Ethan Suplee
For most of his career, Suplee has played obese characters, most notably white supremasist Seth Ryan in American History X and high school football player Louie Lastik in Remember the Titans. But as time has gone on, he’s gotten noticeably slimmer, and now he’s really hulked up. In total, he’s lost 200lb by cutting back on his caloric intake, increasing the amount of protein in his diet, and working out 6 days a week.
3. Tim McGraw
Back in 2008 when the legendary country singer made his acting debut in the movie Four Christmases, his daughter remarked that he looked “big” on the screen. Tipping the scales at 215lb, he made the decision to make some lifestyle changes and as a result lost 40lb. He started off by going on light walks in the mornings, eventually raising it to 20-minute daily jogs and weight training. He has stated that not only does he feel better healthwise, it gives him more endurance when he’s on stage.
4. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino
When the star of Jersey Shore was busted for tax evasion and sentenced to 8 months in prison, he figured it would be a good idea to use that time to get fit. He left the Federal Pen 35lb slimmer thanks to a strict regiment that included working out as often as three times a day and intermittent fasting. He has stated that he fasted for as many as 19 hours, which is every bit as difficult as it sounds.
5. Ed Sheeran
After finishing a tour, the English folk-pop singer noticed his weight ballooning. As he put it, it was the result of a diet that consisted largely of beer and pizza. He noted that when he was actually performing, it wasn’t difficult to maintain an acceptable weight since he was so busy. But when taking time off, he would mostly just sit around and make poor eating choices. That’s when he called on his hockey playing girlfriend to help whip him into shape. He credits his weight loss to his simple 10-minute workouts that consist of 30 second intervals of walking followed by 30 seconds of sprinting.
6. Andy Cohen
The host of Bravo’s Watch What Happens noticed his suits were fitting tighter and beach season was fast approaching, so it was time to slim down. He lost a modest 12lb in 3 months by cutting back on alcohol consumption and eating healthier foods. Two years after making the decision, he has continued to maintain his weight by being more aware about what he eats.
7. Simon Cowell
In 2017, the judge on America’s Got Talent was walking down the stairs in his house when he suddenly fainted due to low blood pressure. As a result of this episode, he knew it was time to focus on his health. He became a “mostly” vegan, eliminating all meat and dairy, although he continues to eat fish on occasion. He also ditched sugar and wheat, two things that had featured prominently in his diet.
8. Jimmy Kimmel
In his younger days, the ABC late night star seemed to have difficulty losing his Freshman 15, as evidenced by his chubby appearance on Win Ben Stein’s Money and The Man Show two decades ago. Weighing as much as 208lb, he attributed his girth to a diet of chicken wings, pasta and steak. But when Dr. Oz expressed concern about Kimmel’s health in 2008, it spurred him to make changes. Today, he practices what he calls the 5:2 diet; five days a week he eats whatever he wants while on Mondays and Thursdays he limits his intake to a measly 500 calories. Whatever he is doing, it’s worked. He’s stayed at 170lb for more than a decade.
9. DJ Khaled
In 2019 the musician and talent show judge was tipping the scales at nearly 300lb when he joined the Weight Watchers as a spokesman and participant. He chose the freestyle option in which he must stay under a certain daily point total, which he says is easy since many of the foods have been assigned 0 points. So when he has a craving, he can snack on something without going over. To date he’s lost 25lb.
10. Gordon Ramsey
As is common with chefs, Ramsey found his weight spiraling out of control. Once he reached 250lb, his wife Tana made it clear that she was not impressed. In other words, lose the weight or possibly lose the wife. Thanks to a training program developed by a former British Army captain, he not only slimmed down, he was able to participate in an Ironman competition in Hawaii! His most important tip to staying slim is pretty simple: drink lots of water.
