It’s hard to believe it’s been over 30 years since we were introduced to the masterpiece that is Clueless. But did you know that the movie that showed us computerised closets, very questionable driving and the phrase “as if” was based on Jane Austen’s Emma? Writer and director Amy Heckerling did a great job transforming an early-19th-century novel into a funny, memorable and very quotable story about wealthy Beverly Hills teenagers navigating high school life and all that comes with it: romance, friendship, popularity and truly ginormous cellphones of the ’90s.
The film made $56 million and obviously became a cult classic. The plaid outfits, slang and one-liners remain instantly recognisable to this day, and Paul Rudd still looks like 1996 was only a few months ago. So, let’s take a look at what happened to the cast of Clueless three decades later.
Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz
Alicia Silverstone wasn’t exactly a newbie in the world of acting before Clueless. She appeared in several Aerosmith videos and worked on projects like The Crush. But the role of Cher Horowitz definitely turned her into one of the most recognisable stars of the ’90s.
She enjoyed working on Clueless, but at the time, she had no idea it would become such a cultural cornerstone. She later appeared in many TV shows and movies. She played Batgirl in Batman & Robin and has since worked steadily on films like Vamps, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Reptile, Pretty Thing and Bugonia. She also starred in the Netflix holiday movie A Merry Little Ex-Mas.
But she never truly left her iconic role as Cher behind. She recreated the classic yellow plaid look on Lip Sync Battle, recreated a scene on TikTok with her son and even played a modern version of Cher in a 2023 Super Bowl commercial. In April 2025, there were even reports that she would reprise the role in a sequel series on Peacock, but unfortunately, that project was cancelled.
Outside of acting, Silverstone is known for her environmental and animal-rights advocacy. She even created a lifestyle platform called The Kind Life, which focuses on vegan food, sustainability and environmentally conscious living.
Stacey Dash as Dionne Davenport
Stacey Dash had appeared in Moving, Mo’ Money and Renaissance Man before she got her role in Clueless. But playing Cher’s stylish and outspoken best friend, Dionne Davenport, became her most recognisable role. She later reprised the character in the Clueless TV series, which ran from 1996 to 1999, and reunited with Alicia Silverstone for a TikTok video in 2022. Dash was also expected to return as Dionne in a Peacock series, but unfortunately, the project never moved forward.
Outside of Clueless, Dash appeared in movies like View from the Top, I Could Never Be Your Woman, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, First Lady and The Doctor With Two Faces. Her TV credits include The Game and Single Ladies, and she also appeared in Kanye West’s “All Falls Down” music video. Between 2014 and 2017, she worked as a guest commentator for Fox News. Dash has been married four times and has two adult children, Austin and Lola.
Brittany Murphy as Tai Frasier
Brittany Murphy’s Tai arrived at Bronson Alcott High with curly hair, a strong accent and no idea that Cher was about to give her a complete makeover. But Murphy made the character much more than just the awkward new girl. Tai was funny, vulnerable and full of personality, and her comment about Cher being “a virgin who can’t drive” remains one of the most memorable lines in the movie.
The role became Murphy’s major breakthrough, and she went on to appear in popular movies like Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, Just Married, Uptown Girls and Sin City. She was also a talented singer, and her song “Faster Kill Pussycat” with Paul Oakenfold topped Billboard’s dance chart. Murphy married Simon Monjack in 2007 and sadly died from pneumonia in December 2009 at just 32 years old. Her Clueless co-stars still remember her as a bright and energetic presence, something that is easy to see whenever Tai appears on screen.
Paul Rudd as Josh Lucas
Paul Rudd played Josh, Cher’s socially conscious former stepbrother who visits the Horowitz home, helps her father with legal work and eventually becomes Cher’s love interest. The family connection sounds a little strange when explained out loud, but Rudd’s charm helped make the relationship work. Clueless also helped establish him as a leading man, although his career soon moved far beyond romantic comedies.
Rudd later played Mike Hannigan on Friends and appeared in major comedies like Anchorman, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, I Love You, Man and This Is 40. He also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man and appeared in Parks and Recreation and Only Murders in the Building. His more recent movies include Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Death of a Unicorn, Anaconda and Power Ballad. Rudd was named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2021 and has two children with his wife, Julie Yaeger.
Donald Faison as Murray Duvall
Donald Faison played Murray, Dionne’s boyfriend and the reason behind one of the movie’s funniest arguments after he suddenly shaved his head. Faison returned for the Clueless television series and has often said that he would happily play Murray again. He has even suggested a sequel focused on the original characters’ children, with Cher becoming the strict parent this time around. Of course, she would probably need to improve her driving first.
After Clueless, Faison appeared in Waiting to Exhale, Josie and the Pussycats and Uptown Girls, which reunited him with Brittany Murphy. But his biggest role came when he played Dr. Chris Turk on Scrubs for nine seasons. He later starred in The Exes and Extended Family and has also worked extensively as a voice actor. Faison has six children and has been married to CaCee Cobb since 2012.
Elisa Donovan as Amber Mariens
Elisa Donovan played Amber, Cher’s fashionable rival and the proud owner of an impressive amount of feathered clothing. Her sharp comic timing made Amber much more memorable than the average high school rival, and she also helped popularise the dismissive “whatever” hand gesture. Donovan reprised the role in the Clueless TV series and later appeared with Alicia Silverstone in Rakuten’s 2023 Super Bowl commercial.
Outside of Clueless, Donovan appeared in A Night at the Roxbury, Beverly Hills, 90210, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and several films in The Dog Who Saved… series. She also appeared as Joey Fatone’s love interest in NSYNC’s “Thinking of You” music video. Donovan released her memoir, Wake Me When You Leave, in 2021 and later starred in the 2025 Hallmark movie Double Scoop. She married Charlie Bigelow in 2012, and they have a daughter named Scarlett Avery.
Jeremy Sisto as Elton Tiscia
Jeremy Sisto played Elton, the wealthy and rather self-important student Cher initially tries to match with Tai. Unfortunately, Elton is much more interested in Cher, which leads to an uncomfortable encounter in his car and leaves Cher alone in a dark parking lot. His behaviour was unpleasant enough that some viewers may still be suspicious of anyone named Elton who offers them a ride.
After Clueless, Sisto built a successful career in both film and television. He starred in HBO’s Six Feet Under, appeared in Waitress and played Detective Cyrus Lupo on Law & Order. He later starred in Suburgatory, where he briefly reunited with Alicia Silverstone, and has played Jubal Valentine on CBS’s FBI since 2018. Sisto married Addie Lane in 2009, and they have two children, Charlie Ballerina and Bastian Kick.
Breckin Meyer as Travis Birkenstock
Breckin Meyer played Travis Birkenstock, Tai’s sweet and relaxed skateboarding love interest. Travis wasn’t exactly the most academically successful student at Bronson Alcott High, but he was still impressively cheerful about receiving a report card filled with tardies. Meyer has said that he based parts of the character on laid-back movie personalities like Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Ted Logan from Bill & Ted.
After Clueless, Meyer appeared in movies like Road Trip, Rat Race, Garfield, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Unpregnant. He also starred in the TV series Franklin & Bash and appeared in Good Girls. Meyer has worked as both a writer and voice actor on Robot Chicken and has voiced Joseph Gribble on King of the Hill. He was married to Deborah Kaplan from 2001 to 2012, and they share two daughters. Since 2024, he has been in a relationship with Kelly Rizzo.
Dan Hedaya as Mel Horowitz
Dan Hedaya played Mel Horowitz, Cher’s intimidating lawyer father who spends much of the movie shouting into telephones, working on legal cases and questioning whether Cher’s outfits technically count as clothing. But beneath all of that yelling, Mel is clearly a loving and protective father who wants the best for his daughter, even when he doesn’t always understand her choices.
Hedaya was already an established actor before Clueless, with credits including Cheers, The Tortellis and NYPD Blue. The same year Clueless was released, he appeared in The Usual Suspects, and he later starred in The First Wives Club, Mulholland Drive and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. His TV work includes appearances in Monk, Gotham and Blue Bloods, while his more recent films include The God Committee and Influenced.
Wallace Shawn as Mr. Wendell Hall
Wallace Shawn was already famous for playing Vizzini in The Princess Bride before joining Clueless as Mr. Hall, Cher’s debate teacher. Cher successfully matches him with Miss Geist, partly because she wants them to be happy and partly because she believes happy teachers are more generous when giving grades. It may be manipulation, but at least it worked out well for everyone involved.
Shawn reprised Mr. Hall in the Clueless television series and has spoken fondly about the movie and its fans. His long career also includes voicing Rex in the Toy Story movies and appearing in shows like Gossip Girl, Young Sheldon and Evil. In addition to acting, Shawn is a respected playwright and essayist and was named a Master American Dramatist in 2005. He has been in a relationship with writer Deborah Eisenberg since the 1970s.
Justin Walker as Christian Stovitz
Justin Walker played Christian, the stylish new student Cher initially believes could become her perfect boyfriend. He loves fashion, classic movies and a well-tailored outfit, so it makes sense that Cher immediately thinks they are meant for each other. She eventually learns that Christian is gay, and they settle into a friendship built largely around shopping and their shared appreciation for good clothes.
Walker continued acting for several years after Clueless, appearing in a small number of film and television projects through the mid-2000s. He later stepped away from Hollywood and moved into the restaurant and business worlds. In 2010, he became the owner of Teddy Teadle’s Grill in Rancho Mirage, California, and also worked with the fantasy sports platform Draftster.com. Although he left acting behind, Christian remains the role viewers remember him for most.
Twink Caplan as Miss Toby Geist
Twink Caplan played Miss Geist, the warm but rather disorganised teacher Cher decides to match with Mr. Hall. Cher begins the project because she wants better grades, but the plan unexpectedly creates a real romance. By the end of the movie, Mr. Hall and Miss Geist are married, proving that even slightly selfish matchmaking can occasionally produce a happy ending.
Caplan returned as Miss Geist in the Clueless television series and also worked as an executive producer on the show. Her other acting credits include Look Who’s Talking, A Night at the Roxbury and Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. She also appeared as a dance instructor on Community, once again finding herself surrounded by unusual students in an educational setting.
