9 of the Best Fairy Tale Films For Adults

Advertisements

We’ve all been there: someone wants to watch a fairy tale movie but you’re not 5 anymore so you want other things in life. There’s very little options in that kind of situation. You can ignore it, as most people do, and pretend the request was aimed at someone else. You can elbow drop the person that made the request to express your profound disdain of the implication you would do such a silly thing in the first place. Or you can suggest a fairy tale movie that you, being the adult human being that you are, might also enjoy. Mileage may vary on all of these, except the elbow drop. Elbow drops always get the point across.
But since we’re not going to advocate using violence against your friends and loved ones, and ignoring people is just as bad, we’ll stick to a few suggestions of fairy tale films that might not bore every last drop of joie de vivre (that’s French) out of your soul. But, again, mileage may vary.

Mirror Mirror
A more modern take on Snow White, this one stars Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as the evil queen. And let’s face it, we all knew Julia was evil.

Sleepy Hollow
An old-ish Burton Movie, Sleepy Hollow is the wonderful film about the Headless Horseman, played by Christopher Walken. Also stars Johnny Depp, like most Burton movies.

Red Riding Hood
It’s not the best movie around, but it’s got Amanda Seyfried and it’s based on a story we all know. Should be enough, right?

Maleficent
Starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, this is one of the better movies on this list. Heck, it was even nominated for an Oscar!

Edward Scissorhands
Another Burton/Depp collaboration about a weirdo trying to fit into society. Anyway, Edward has hands made of scissors. You have no idea how lucky he got with a last name like that, it’s like they knew!

Pan’s Labyrinth
The biggest Oscar winner on this list, so that should be enough to warrant a watch. Also, Guillermo del Toro wrote it – so you know it’s good.

Snow White and the Huntsman
This movie stars “Chick From Twilight” and Thor. Also Charlize Theron. Apart from that, not much to say about this movie. It’s a movie. Not a particularly good one, but not a particularly bad one either. It’s just… a movie.

Alice in Wonderland
Jeez, another Burton/Depp collaboration? Well, this one won two Oscars (one less than Pan’s Labyrinth), so y’know. In this case I’d say it means very little, since the other Burton/Depp movies I mentioned were way better.

Oz the Great and Powerful
This movie has equal parts “big names that can convince people to watch this” and “cringeworthy acting that makes people not want to watch this”. I guess it depends on how badly you want to see The Wizard of Oz in HD and all that other modern mumbo-jumbo.
