Who has the time and money to watch every single movie in the theaters these days? Between the comic book movies like Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Venom, coming out almost every month, and the regular old blockbusters, there’s just no time for something fresh and new. Each year dozens of astonishing movies are being overlooked and it’s pretty sad.
But don’t worry, you can still catch some of the movies from my list in your theater, or at least buy them on DVD. These are 7 underappreciated movies of 2018 you’ve probably already missed.
Thoroughbreds
Anyone who loves a good black comedy should watch Thoroughbreds. In a nutshell, it’s about two friends Lily and Amanda. Lily feels everything, while Amanda feels absolutely nothing, so what’s going to happen when they plan to kill Lily’s tyrannical stepdad? Shenanigans!
The Endless
The Endless has the elements of sci-fi, horror, and thriller with a good dose of mystery. If a movie with 100% positive “Certified Fresh” rating is not worthy to be on a list like this, I don’t know what is. Some say, The Endless is like Edge of Tomorrow mixed with Annihilation and some 10 Cloverfield Lane. All the good stuff.
Gemini
Alright, who’s up for some good old-fashioned neo-noir thriller? When the critics call your movie “a piece of clean, confident visual storytelling”, you go out there and celebrate the success! Unless, of course, no-one wants to watch your movies. Look, it’s got all the ingredients of a great detective movie and you shouldn’t have missed it, so at least give it a shot on DVD!

The Quiet Place
As The Quiet Place is the newest flick on this list, you can probably still catch it, but the backwater cinema near me only screened it for 3 days at 1 PM. It’s like they didn’t know it’s a horror movie. And, oh my god, it’s a suspenseful one. The whole world has been plagued by these things that pray on people, and like bats, have very acute hearing, so our main characters must not make a single sound. Oh, yeah, and one of the characters is like 9 months preggers, so you know shit’s gonna hit the fan sooner or later. Please go see it if you can.
I Kill Giants
Although it’s an adaptation of Joe Kelly’s graphic novel “I Kill Giants”, it’s not your usual comic book. Bunny ears, magical artifacts, an oversized Norse war hammer, and the never-ending struggle against the Giants who want to conquer the world. Sounds cliché, I know, but just look at that trailer. As the plot progresses we start to notice that it could all very well be happening in the girl’s imagination… or maybe not? If you don’t cry in the end, you’re not human.
Unsane
The psychological horror-thriller Unsane was shot entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus, but you’d never be able to tell! Was there a stalker, or was he always just a figment of the main character’s twisted imagination? If you like journeying into the human psyche (think something like Legion), this is a must-watch for you!
You Were Never Really Here
Action-packed adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novel with Joaquin Phoenix as a former FBI agent is everything that you never knew you wanted! A child was kidnapped, and Phoenix is about to break some faces to get her back. I love these movies, and so should you. Also, there’s a huge twist over another twist, so keep your eyes peeled. You can still catch this movie in theaters!
