2019 will be a bookend for quite a few movie trilogies and franchises. For example, this winter will bring us the 9th episode of Star Wars, and in April the Russo brothers will show us their 3-hour magnum opus “Avengers: Endgame”. Not to mention DC’s “Shazam!”
All in all, 2019 is a great year for action movie fans! Here are top 10 best action movies of 2019!
1. Battle Angel Alita
From the minds of James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez comes one of the most faithful manga adaptations to this day. I’ve personally seen it 3 times in the theaters, that’s how freaking gorgeous it was. Robots, teen angst, more robots, and Rosa Salazar as Alita. What could be better?
2. Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, kicks all kinds of alien butts and judging by Kevin Feige’s comments, she’s supposed to be the new leader of the Avengers after whatever happens in Endgame. I personally can’t wait to see more of her in the MCU!
3. Avengers Endgame
While we’re at it, let’s also mention the biggest action movie of all time (well, probably) – Avengers: Endgame. Not only will it be the culmination of more than 20 movies and story lines, it will go on for three hours! How will our favorite heroes defeat the Mad Titan? Will the dusted heroes come back? What awaits us beyond the Infinity saga?
4. Hellboy
Hellboy is probably one of my favorite comics of all time, so it’s no surprise I’m stoked to see this reboot. So far the trailers have been a hit or miss for me, but I have faith in Mike Mignola’s vision, as the guy who created Hellboy. And also, it’s been confirmed to be rated R, which means gallons of blood, and so on and so forth.
5. Shazam!
DC’s finally made a great movie, y’all! Let’s hear it for Shazam! Billy Batson, a 14 or 15 y.o. kid gets superpowers from an ancient wizard, allowing him to turn into a buff Zach Levy! Trust me this is a perfect action comedy mixture.
6. John Wick 3
Yet another bookend for a trilogy. First they kill his dog, then they use and frame him, and now every mercenary on the streets is after his head. That’s John freakin’ Wick for ya – the best gun-fu action movie on this side of the Milky Way.
7. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Even though we’re not supposed to know if Spider-Man comes back from being dusted in the Snappening, SONY just couldn’t keep a secret. Thanks for spoiling Endgame, guys! So yeah, the movie starts right after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and everything seems to be okay in the world (time travel confirmed). Spidey and his schoolmates go to London where some “mysterious” elemental monsters have decided to smash everything. Now Peter has to do his spider thing and save the day!
8. Godzilla: King of monsters
If you thought the 2014 Godzilla movie could’ve used more Godzilla in it, then A) shut up, it was perfect! and B) this time we’re gonna have twice as many monsters, so the big G will probably appear at the end, as well. It’s going to be fun!
9. Detective Pikachu
First ever live-action Pokemon movie looks very promising! Pikachu is voiced by the one and only Ryan Reynolds, so that fact alone is worth the admission price. Other than that, it seems like the VFX people and CG artists have been trying their hardest to create the freakiest Pokemon ever seen on the big screen. Just look at Ludicolo, Lickitung, or Mr. Mime… Yikes!
10. MIB International
This last spot was supposed to be taken by Star Wars, but I just don’t have a clue what it’s going to be about, so instead we’re gonna put Thor and Valkyrie’s wacky adventure as agents of the secret alien-supervising organization – Men in Black, as portrayed before by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. We’re finally going outside the US in this movie, and from the looks of it, it’s going to be an awesome action comedy!
