On-Screen Couples That Couldn’t Stay Together In Real Life

There are lots of celebrities that somehow start a relationship together either during or after playing in a movie together where they’re supposed to be a couple. But much like other, normal love, it doesn’t always end in the best way. Sometimes the fire just dies out after a while, other times there’s a third party involved which turns the whole thing into a mess the tabloids are going to adore.

Regardless of the who and why, let’s take a look at some celebrity on-screen couples that couldn’t make it work in real life.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

When this couple met each other at the audition for Days of Thunder, they became the most popular couple in Hollywood. They starred in many movies together, and to everyone’s surprise, Tom Cruise filed for their divorce in 2001. Rumor has it that had something to do with him becoming very much tied to Scientology at that time, but no one will really know what went on in Tom’s head at that time.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

The only good thing to come out of that bad Daredevil movie was the relationship between Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. They met a few years before that, on the set of Pearl Harbor, but didn’t develop feelings for each other until Daredevil. Nothing to make souls align like the worst comic book movie in cinematic history, am I right? The day after their tenth anniversary, they announced their separation.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Despite Pitt being married to Jennifer Aniston at the time, he fell for Jolie’s charms when filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith together. It took them a while to admit to their relationship and fully go for it, but after marrying in 2014 (11 years after the movie, if you’re keeping track), they divorced only two years later and Brangelina was no more.

Anna Faris and Chris Pratt

They grew up in the same neighborhood but actually never met before the set of Take Me Home Tonight. Faris was still married at the time, but not long after her divorce Chris Pratt proposed to her. For some reason they shocked everyone by getting a divorce in 2017, but they still respect each other and wish each other the best.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan

After this couple met on the set of Step Up and stepped up right onto the altar, they sadly couldn’t keep the love going and filed for divorce in 2018. No one knows why, and it’s not really our business either.

Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon

Much like Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, this was an acting couple we never thought would separate. They played an on-screen couple for the first time in Cruel Intentions and got married shortly after that. At that time, Witherspoon was already pregnant with her first child, which would eventually lead to their divorce in 2006. Reese didn’t regret anything about her life, but did mention she got married and had kids before she really knew herself. As far as reasons for a divorce go, that’s a pretty mature and valid one!

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

If you’ve seen The Notebook, you know these two were bound to end up as a couple. Their relationship started off pretty heated, with the pair not being too fond of each other and reportedly even screaming at each other behind closed doors. Sadly, the relationship also ended the same way.
