Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo, has basically lived her entire life in the public eye. One minute, she was a tiny pageant kid cracking one-liners on Toddlers & Tiaras, and the next, she’s blowing out 20 candles while studying to work with newborn babies. That’s a pretty wild development, especially considering how complicated her childhood was.
Here’s the road from child star to college student, with all the messy family chapters in between.
From pageant kid to instant TV icon
Alana first appeared on Toddlers & Tiaras when she was around 5, but she wasn’t the quiet, well-behaved pageant stereotype. Alana was the opposite of what a kid her age should act like: loud, confident, and totally obnoxious. That energy turned into a full-on reality show in 2012 when Here Comes Honey Boo Boo first aired on TLC.
The show followed Alana, her mom, June Shannon, plus her sisters Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, and Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird. It ran for four seasons and gave viewers an up-close look at a family dynamic that was equal parts chaotic and entertaining.

Getting canceled isn’t fun
In 2014, TLC execs decided to cut the show after finding out that Mama June was involved with a convicted sex offender. That’s just bad publicity for both sides. For Alana, this abrupt ending meant her biggest platform vanished in a single instant. And that instability didn’t exactly disappear along with the cameras and the crew.

Back on TV
A few years later, Alana was back on screen again, this time being featured in Mama June: Family Crisis. The show primarily focused on June and the family, but didn’t censor or cut away from the darker stuff, especially June’s addiction struggles. One of the most heartbreaking storylines involved Alana’s sister Anna, who was dealing with cancer. Anna died in December 2023, and that loss hit the family hard. By then, viewers weren’t just watching reality TV arguments—they were watching real grief and real long-term consequences.

Dancing with the Stars: Juniors
In 2018, Alana did something that felt a little more like the classic “child star experience” when she joined Dancing with the Stars: Juniors. She partnered with Tristan Ianiero and ended up placing eighth. It was still stressful because performing on national TV is usually stressful as hell for literally anyone, but it also showed Alana trying to do something for herself, and not just react to all the chaos surrounding her.
Custody drama and a mother-daughter bond
By 2019, things got even more serious behind the scenes. June lost custody of Alana after being charged with drug possession. That’s when Lauryn “Pumpkin” stepped in as Alana’s legal guardian and later gained sole custody during Alana’s late-teen years. Imagine having to treat your sister like your parent because your actual parent is so messed up that they can’t keep it together for longer than a few minutes. That’s just awful.
Alana and June have had a rocky relationship, but they did have periods when things were calmer. All of June’s daughters attended her wedding to Justin Stroud in 2023, which seemed to be a bit of a hopeful moment. Then 2024 happened, and Alana accused June of taking $35,000 from her when she was a child and refusing to pay it back. That amount of money is nothing to scoff at, especially when you’re still just a kid.
Around the time the Lifetime biopic I Was Honey Boo Boo came out, Alana made it clear she wasn’t trying to just dunk on her mom for entertainment. She did not pretend everything was fine, but she also did not try to erase her mother from her life.
College years and a real career goal
The biggest shift in Alana’s story right now is that she’s actively planning out her future and not just free-falling. She graduated from high school in 2023 and enrolled at Regis University in Colorado, working on getting a degree in neonatal nursing. That’s not an influencer’s dream job in any shape or form. It’s long hours, intense studying, and a lot of emotional resilience. The fact that she’s aiming for that says a lot about how she wants her life to look going forward.

Starting a relationship
Adulthood is also about finding a relationship that works for you, and Alana started dating Dralin Carswell when she was 16, while he was 21, which understandably raised eyebrows. People worry about power dynamics and maturity gaps in relationships like that, especially when someone is still a minor. Alana has publicly brushed off criticism and said the people close to her supported the relationship. They’ve since been living together in Colorado and appear to still be doing well. She’s an adult now, and she seems intent on handling whatever curveballs life throws her.
