2019 has been a pretty good year for movies and cinema overall, but still there’s been a few movies that have somehow missed the mark. Maybe they didn’t live up to the hype or they were simply written badly, there’s plenty of reasons for movies to tank at the box office or with the critics.
Let’s take a look at some of the most disappointing movies of 2019.
Dark Phoenix
I think many people will be happy that this is the last X-Men movie we’ll see before Marvel takes over and introduces them to the MCU. This series has truly run its course by now. The story was horrible, the acting was worse, … This movie actually made me miss X-Men: The Last Stand.
Men In Black International
Oh look, a movie based on a franchise that was semi-profitable starring actors that have shown that they work well together (for comedy and serious purposes) in the MCU. What could go wrong? Well, pretty much everything. This movie was hardly watchable, I have no idea how this got past initial screenings.
Hellboy
Considering how average the original movies were (and how popular superhero movies are lately), it was hard to imagine that this movie would be worse than the version made over a decade ago. Sadly, that’s exactly what it is. It’s much, much worse.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
You know how it’s never a good sign when a movie has an aggressive marketing campaign prior to release and then once the movie gets released you don’t hear a single word about it anymore? That’s what happened to Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I’ve no idea how bad the movie truly is, because it’s even hard to find someone that bothered to review it properly. That’s how little people cared about this film.
Terminator: Dark Fate
It had
James Cameron and the original actors, so surely this would be the first good
Terminator movie since 1984, right? Well, wrong. It’s the best Terminator movie since Judgment Day, sure,
but it’s still so shallow and bland it makes the eyeballs hurt.
Gemini Man
Will Smith versus
Will Smith, and I find myself not rooting for either one of them. I’m not sure
if that was intended or not, but I’m guessing it’s not a good thing.
Serenity
This Matthew McConaughey movie (that also starred Anne Hathaway) had one of the worst box office openings ever for either actor and the movie was such a huge success with test audiences that they moved the movie release back to January – commonly known as the dump month in cinema. I’m looking for something to tell you that’ll redeem this movie, but I don’t think it exists.
