People go missing all the time and for various reasons. In our age of digital technology the police can just use the “find my phone” app in most cases, and the stranded kid or teen will be found in no time. But what if a whole village or city would simply vanish in a single moment, or even worse – an entire civilization? There’s a chance that all of these mass disappearances have a logical explanation, but the circumstances are incredibly bizarre to say the least.
Here are 5 mysterious cases of mass disappearances that will send chills down your spine.
1. Flannan Isles Lighthouse Keepers, 1900
It’s the year 1900, December 15. No light is coming out of the lighthouse on the Flannan Isles. A small crew of volunteers decides to investigate this mystery. 11 days later they came back to the main ship and reported that the three lighthouse keepers – Thomas Marshall, James Ducat, and Donald McArthur – were nowhere to be found. No bodies, no nothing. Eventually the captain proposed a theory that all three of them must have blown over the cliffs or drowned.
2. Roanoke Colony, 1587
The Roanoke was one of the very first colonies built by the English settlers. Everything was going fine until one day, when the colony governor John White returned from a long and arduous trip to Europe only to find that all the settlers had vanished. Only a single skeleton was found and the word “croatoan” etched into a tree. The most popular theory says that the Croatoan tribe killed the intruders. But that would be too easy. Definitely something fishy here.
3. The Village Of Hoer Verde, 1923
A group of tourists entered a small Brazilian village of Hoer Verde in February of 1923. What they discovered would creep anyone out. Out of 600 residents, there were zero to be found in the entire village. Weirdest thing was that all the food, clothes, and other possessions were left behind. Later the police had found a gun that was shot recently and a blackboard saying “no salvation”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like Aliens to me!
4. Mary Celeste, 1872
Is it possible for the entire crew and passengers of a huge ship to just vanish without a trace? It’s a rhetorical question, because the answer is “it actually happened”. In December 1872, the Mary Celeste ship was spotted by Italian sailors. Upon further investigation, the rescuers didn’t find a single soul on the vessel, while all their personal belongings and the ship’s cargo was still intact.
5. The Lost Civilization Of The Indus Valley, 1500 BC
People from this ancient civilization were famous for their technological and engineering wonders, but were they really killed by nuclear strikes? Yeah, it’s 1500 BC and I said “nuclear strike”. Scientists and archaeologists working together on this mystery found multiple evidence of rapid exposure to radiation as well as intense heat. I was probably those pesky Atlaneans with their super weapon!
