There are musicians out there, who, aside from immense talent, charisma, and a huge fan following, have a certain… mystery to them. People say some the legendary musicians cheated death, made a deal with the Devil, or were parts of conspiracies that remain unsolved to this day. Let’s try to figure out who are these 9 most mysterious musicians of all time!
Ghost
Ghost is a Swedish occult rock band, whose song lyrics often praise Satan, and have a hellish vibe in general. But that’s nothing special. The reason why they’re on this list is that all 6 members remain completely anonymous to this day! They’re sort of like Gorillaz but much more messed up. The 6 of them are known as “nameless ghouls”, so there’s that.
Tupac
If you think that Tupac is on the list because people think he survived being shot 4 times, faked his death, and is now living somewhere on Cuba or Barbados… you’d actually be 100% correct! It’s been over 10 years now and still no proof of him being alive, apart from some blurry pictures. Even if he is alive, just let him be, fools! What’s it to ya?
Richey Edwards
If you’re a fan of Manic Street Preachers, you probably know the situation with Richey Edwards, who was their guitarist and lyricist. One day he went to his hometown, instead of flying to the US, stayed there for 2 weeks, and then just disappeared from the face of the earth at the age of 27. After 13 years of searching, he was finally declared dead, but despite this, the other band members still pay 25% of their salaries into his bank account, believing he is still out there somewhere.
Giuseppe Tartini
If you have no idea who Giuseppe Tartini is, I won’t blame you, only hardcore violinists are familiar with this name. Born in 1692 Giuseppe was the first known owner of one of the famous Stradivarius violins. Just a few years before his death, Tartini had a weird dream about meeting the devil himself, who played him a piece on the violin. Of course he wrote everything down in the morning, and that’s how we got the Violin Sonata in G minor, also known as “The Devil’s Sonata”. The piece was incredibly complex, nearly unplayable, and everyone who played it completely lost their souls to the devil… Or at least that’s how the story goes.
Elvis Presley
The King still lives! Or does he? Pretty sure you’re familiar with this man’s story, but let me just do a quick recap for our reptilian friends from another planet. Elvis died under mysterious circumstances (officially, it was a heart attack cause by drug OD) in 1977. But dying isn’t an option, apparently, when you’re the most popular person on the planet, that’s why a lot of people believe Elvis’s death was a conspiracy to cover up aliens or some stuff, and that he’s still living somewhere in Michigan. Great stuff!
Robert Johnson
Here comes another member of the elite Club 27 – the blues legend Robert Johnson, who died of poisoning in 1938. Johnson really wanted to become an amazing blues guitarist, but he kinda sucked at it. Until one night, he blues’d like no-one ever blues’d before. He literally learned, nay, mastered the guitar overnight! And of course, when asked “how” Johnson said he had met the devil at a crossroad. Allegedly, the big red guy used his uncanny ear to tune the strings of Rob’s guitar, and blessed him with superb talent… in exchange for his soul, naturally. Who knows, maybe that’s how the devil operated back in the day.
Syd Barrett
Syd Barrett, is best known for being a part of the iconic psychedelic rock group Pink Floyd. After a freaky on-stage accident, where half of Syd’s face melted away, he quit Pink Floyd, and started a band named Stars. It was never as successful as PF, but one of their unpublished albums supposedly hides a dark secret. In one of the songs, “Two Little Towers,” Syd Barrett sings about towers crumbling in 2001. In addition to that he also predicted his own death in 2006.
Jimmy Page
The legendary Jimmy Page was the guitarist in Led Zeppelin, and was said to have made a deal with the devil. Actually, it is rumored that three of the band members made the same deal. In fact, their most famous song, “Stairway to Heaven,” allegedly tells you to worship the devil if you play it backwards. You know, this whole “play backwards” thing is who would play this masterpiece (or any other song) backwards?
David Bowie
Bowie has always used all sorts of space-related metaphors, referring to himself as the fallen star, Ziggy Stardust, The Man Who Fell to Earth. And who could forget his Starman and Astronauts songs? It’s only natural that some people often thought he’s a visitor from space. All that cosmic stuff in combination with his alleged obsession with protective pentagrams, the song “Lazarus”, and almost unhealthy interest in Kabballah, made people speculate, that David Bowie may very well still be alive! Who knows, maybe he is, but probably not.
