Do you ever browse Netflix and find nothing to watch? Well, that might be because either you have way too much free time or you’re sticking to English shows. If it’s the latter, I might have the perfect solution for you.

Netflix has a plethora of foreign language shows that actually have decent storylines and are worth a watch – probably even more than English spoken ones. The real difficulty is finding them, but this list should probably get you well on the way.

Dark
This German show has lots of parallels with Stranger Things, which should instantly put it on your “might watch” list. The main differences are that Dark actually goes a lot deeper and darker than Stranger Things does. The show actually has more akin to The Killing or The Returned when it comes to tension and general feel, so it’s definitely one that’s worth checking out.

La Casa De Papel (Money Heist)
This is a very popular show from Spain, and plenty has been written about this already. It’s about a group of people trying to pull off the biggest heist in history, but their personal demons get in the way of doing the job. It’s an amazing story that’s a lot deeper than you’d expect from the generic “people robbing a bank” storyline.

Cable Girls
Another Spanish series, this one is about four young women working for a telephone company back in the 1920’s. It shows how women were treated and which struggles these women had to overcome to make a proper life for themselves. It’s also been renewed for a fourth season, so this might be the ideal time to catch up on the first three.

3%
This Brazilian show paints a picture of a dystopian future where only 3% of the world’s population are allowed to live in luxury through a test that everyone has to take. While that might sound silly, don’t forget that we currently live in a world where 99% of the wealth is owned by 1% of the people. So actually, the world in this show is three times better.

Rita
This Danish show might not seem like anything special on the outside, but it boasts a great story about a teacher who tries to live an everyday life. She has flaws, she’s very relatable and the show is good fun.

Occupied
Occupied is a Norwegian show that tells the story of a fictional future where Russia has occupied Norway to restore its oil and gas production. It’s a tense political thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat, even if politics aren’t really your thing.

Suburra
This show is crime thriller that deals with the city of Rome and how the Church, crime and state collide. As all sides are looking to gain more power, they all are seemingly more pushing the limits of what is and what isn’t illegal.
